LEWES, Del. — This Saturday November 14, and next Saturday November 21, the Historic Lewes Farmers Market will conduct a food drive to benefit Casa San Francisco located in Milton and Epworth United Methodist Church located in Rehoboth.
Customers are asked to both bring non-perishable items to the Market and to also consider purchasing fresh food at the Market to donate to these two organizations who feed those in our community who need a little help.
The food pantries request certain non-perishables including spaghetti sauce, pasta, peanut butter, jams and jellies, canned fruits/vegetables/soups, boxed cereal, powdered or shelf stable milk, rice, and beans. Please honor the HLFM’s mission and the health needs of folk who use the food bank by providing healthy foods.
Customers and friends should bring items to the HLFM tables at both the entrance and exit of the Market.
At the end of market hours, the produce and other foods will be gathered and delivered to Casa San Francisco and Epworth United Methodist. It’s a challenging time for many, and this is a good way to get nutritious local food to more community members. Market organizers thank customers in advance for their generosity.
The Fall Market is located at the Richard Shields Elementary School parking lot at the corner of Savannah Road and Sussex Drive in Lewes, Delaware, and is open Saturdays from 9 am til noon through November 23 (Saturday before Thanksgiving).
Farmers/producers will be offering all the bounties of a fall harvest: carrots, sweet potatoes, garlic, kale, Brussels sprouts, collard greens, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, beets, radishes, winter squashes, turnips, lettuces, apples, mushrooms, peppers, oysters in the shell, fish, cider, chicken, pork, jams and jellies, honey, baked goods, and fresh cut flowers for the table.
The Market continues its SNAP (EBT Food Stamps) program. To help lower economic barriers to local, healthy food, the HLFM matches up to $20 each participant each week with HLFM Bonus Bucks. SNAP participants are encouraged to come to the SNAP tent at the Market to pick up the bonus $20 in tokens to use at the Market.
The Market is open this Saturday from 9 am to noon. If you are able, it is best to either walk or bike to the market. Lewes School, its parking lot, and its playing fields are entirely fenced off, so there is no parking in the Lewes School parking lot. The Market thanks Beebe Hospital for allowing customers to park in the outdoor Beebe lot in back of the Hospital. Customers can enter that parking area through the main entrance to the Hospital between Rite Aid and the Hospital. If you park at Beebe, please walk to Savannah Road, turn right, and Sussex Drive is two blocks away. Turn right at Sussex Drive and you will see the Market.
Customers who want to know what is happening at the Market each Saturday should subscribe to the HLFM newsletter sent to customers on Thursdays. Newsletter is free. To be included, customers may send their email address to info@historiclewesfarmersmarket.org.
Consistent with its mission, the HLFM is committed to supporting farmers who grow local fruits and vegetables — a “real” farmers market that is producer-only.
