SENECA CO. N.Y. — It is the height of the produce growing season in the Finger Lakes! Peaches, tomatoes, berries, and vegetables are in abundance in gardens, Farmers’ Markets, and at the produce stands. Perhaps, you have some beef roasts or venison in your freezer from last season that can be made into meat jerky. Join Cornell Cooperative Extension of Seneca County at the Lodi Whittier Library on Saturday, August 13th from 10:30am to Noon to learn how to preserve fresh produce and meats through dehydration and other food preservation techniques.

Lodi Food4All has home food preservation equipment to lend out to community members to preserve food at home, but first you need to learn the basic safety practices to participate. By attending this class presented by certified Master Food Preservers from Cornell Cooperative Extension, you will learn all you need to know to safely preserve food at home and then be able to borrow local equipment to get started.
With these healthy recipes and techniques, you will know the exact ingredients you are eating and feeding your family. Avoid the artificial additives and/or cost of store-bought dehydrated and canned foods by learning how to make your own products with fresh ingredients. Dried fruits are delicious and healthy snacks for kids and adults alike. Learning how to make your own meat jerky is very economical and preserving vegetables through different techniques offers lot of recipe creations in the colder months. When winter arrives and you crack open your preserved bounty you will feel accomplished and happy knowing you are eating close to the land. Register today and learn the basics of food preservation!
