DES MOINES, Iowa — Jenny Quiner, of Dogpatch Urban Gardens, will host a Practical Farmers of Iowa field day exploring how she manages and promotes her urban farm on Sunday, Nov. 10, from 1-3 p.m., on her farm in Des Moines (5085 Meredith Drive, on the northwest side of town).
The event – “Urban Farming: Greens and Farm Store Sales” – is free to attend and will include refreshments following the field day. RSVPs are requested for the food by Wednesday, Nov. 6. Sign up online at practicalfarmers.org/field-days, or contact Debra Boekholder at (515) 232-5661 or email@example.com.
Dogpatch Urban Gardens is situated on 1 acre of land in a residential area, with roughly one-quarter acre under cultivation. Jenny has been operating the farm since 2016, and specializes in growing annual vegetable crops, particularly salad greens. All crops are grown without synthetic chemicals.
The business is diversified with multiple ways for the community to support the farm, including salad subscriptions, farm dinners, restaurant sales and a farm stand – a seasonal, on-site store that sells Dogpatch Urban Gardens products, as well as other items from growers across Iowa.
During the field day, guests will get to tour the farm’s garden beds and infrastructure, including the packing shed, farm store and high tunnel. Jenny will share tips for branding, sales and marketing and producing high-quality greens and salad vegetables. She’ll also discuss urban farming and zoning compliance.
Directions are available on Practical Farmers’ website. Note that additional parking is available in the parking lot across from the farm stand (off of 51st Street).
This event is part of Practical Farmers’ main 2019 field day season, which includes 40 events across Iowa, and the region, on topics spanning the agricultural spectrum. The field days are meant to help connect farmers with their peers for networking and farmer-to-farmer learning.
