LEESPORT, Pa. — The Cover Crops and Soil Health Field Day workshop will be held at Harlan Burkholder’s farm, 35 Koffee Lane, Kutztown, PA 19530 on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon.
The following topics will be covered: Viewing and discussing diverse cover crop mixes; Benefits, selection and utilization of cover crops; Combining cover crops for varying field and vegetable cropping systems—simple vs. diverse mixes; Soil Health/Soil Quality — How cover crops promote this; Cover crops for cover, erosion prevention, and use as forages (grazing or mechanical harvest); Nutrient recycling, break crops, green manures, pollinators; and Summer annuals, winter-killed cover crops vs. winter annuals and perennials.
Speakers will be Dave Wilson, Penn State Extension, Field and Forage Crops Agronomist, and Damian Loeper, USDA-NRCS Berks County. It is being sponsored by Penn State Extension, with partnership from The Keystone Chapter Soil and Water Conservation Society, and King’s AgriSeeds.
