EAST GRAND FORKS, Minn. — North Dakota growers, dealers, and processors held 11.4 million hundredweight (cwt) of potatoes in storage on February 1, compared to 14.5 million one year ago according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Current stocks represent 55 percent of the 2016 production. Stocks are defined as all potatoes on hand, regardless of use, including those that will be lost through future shrinkage and dumping.
Comparing stocks by type in North Dakota, Russets accounted for 61 percent of the total, up from 52 percent in 2016. Round whites were 18 percent of the total, down from 22 percent in 2016. Long whites were 6 percent, up from 5 percent in 2016. Reds, at 13 percent of total stocks, were down from 20 percent in 2016. Yellows, at 2 percent, were up from 1 percent in 2016
In Minnesota, growers, dealers, and processors held 11.8 million cwt. compared to 9.1 million at this time last year. Current stocks represent 54 percent of the 2016 production.
Comparing stocks by type in Minnesota, Russets accounted for 83 percent of the total, reds were 9 percent, round whites 4 percent, long whites 3 percent and yellows 2 percent. Those percentages changed very little from last year.
