CAMBRIDGE, N.Y. — The Battenkill Valley Farms – Farmers’ Market and Craft Fair is set to open its 2020 season on Saturday, May 9. The market will have 100 plus vendors at 15 Plains Rd./SR313 Cambridge. NY and operate on Saturdays from 9 AM to 4:30 PM. The market is a rain or shine event with 40 outside and 60 inside vendor booths that continues through mid October.
Farmers markets are an integral part of the urban/farm linkage and have continued to rise in popularity, mostly due to the growing consumer interest in obtaining fresh products directly from the farm. The Battenkill allows consumers to have access to locally grown, farm fresh produce, art, crafts and craft beverage in a rural setting. The Battenkill offers a full day experience similar to the Green Dragon (Lancaster, PA) and The Windmill Farm (Penn Yan, NY) with the ability to facilitate access to groups and tour buses and a Visitors Center for Washington County.
“We are seeking traditional and unique vendors to the venue so we can provide a nice variety of experiences. The number of vendors usually increases as the growing season progresses,” said Ted Berndt, The Battenkill’s owner and manager. We are reaching out to producers and crafters in the Capital region, Vermont and Massachusetts. Customers can expect to find farm fresh produce, baked goods, meats, honey, arts and entertainment. The facility has the potential for aggregation and distribution as a food hub as well”.
Direct marketing of produce and products through farmers markets continues to be an important sales outlet for agricultural producers nationwide.
Food in the United States travels an average of 1,500 miles to get to the kitchen table. All this shipping uses large amounts of natural resources (especially fossil fuels), contributes greatly to pollution, and creates excess trash with extra packaging. Today, there are nearly 4,800 farmers markets operating throughout the nation. Vendor recruitment will continue through Spring 2020. Contact the Battenkill office at 518-321-4033 or www.battenkillvalleyfarms.com to obtain a vendor application and register for the market.
