MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota Farmers Union (MFU) is proud to announce that Farmers Kitchen + Bar opens Aug. 25 in Minneapolis’ historic Mill District.
The MFU full board voted to open the restaurant in August 2019, but plans were interrupted by COVID-19. After being put on hold for much of 2020, the project moved forward in 2021 with a goal of bringing farm-fresh food directly to guests.
Located at 750 South Second St., Minneapolis, the restaurant is open Wednesday through Sunday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Kitchen hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. From 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., the coffee bar will be open and there will be pastries and grab-and-go items for sale. Beginning at 10 a.m., the kitchen will be open, serving appetizers, salads, sandwiches and picnic platters in addition to the grab-and-go items and pastries. Vegetarian, gluten free and dairy free items are on the menu.
“As more staff are onboarded, the goal is to be open seven days a week, serving breakfast, lunch and supper,” said MFU President Gary Wertish. “However, we want to expand as staff are ready. We have an exceptional team at Farmers Kitchen + Bar.”
The team includes Executive Chef Kris Koch, General Manager Simone Simon and Pastry Chef Summer Stover.
Koch believes cooking is an art form and enjoys creating simple dishes where natural flavors shine. Simon loves interacting with customers and enjoys the energy the restaurant atmosphere brings to guests and staff. Stover believes the most important aspect of her work is promoting sustainability and finds that one of the most effective tools to promote this value is food.
Farmers Kitchen + Bar is entirely owned and operated by Minnesota Farmers Union. It connects eaters to family farmers by bringing farm-fresh food to their plates.
“We want Farmers Kitchen + Bar to remind guests of a visit to their grandmother’s kitchen on the farm,” Wertish said. “Ma’s Roast Beef Sandwich, the bread and butter pickles and the rhubarb bars bring back memories for me with each bite.
“As part of our commitment to creating memories for our guests, Farmers Kitchen + Bar will expand its hours and menu as staff say they’re ready,” he said. “Our goal is have a great place to work and great place to dine where we share conversation over Minnesota Grown food.”
