ORONO, Maine — University of Maine Cooperative Extension will offer a five-session tractor safety course in multiple locations this spring, including in Cumberland, Kennebec, Penobscot, Knox and Waldo counties.

Participants will learn how to handle tractors and equipment safely, how to avoid hazards, and how to minimize the chances of accidents.

The classes are designed for adults and youth at least 14 years of age, and are required for 14- and 15-year-olds who plan to operate farm equipment for hire on farms other than their own. Those who successfully complete the written and road tests will be issued a federal certificate of training.

The cost is $20 per person; registration is required. More information, including a full schedule, is available online (extension.umaine.edu/agriculture/tractor-safety/) or by contacting Diana Hartley at 207.622.7546, diana.hartley@maine.edu.
