ST. PAUL, Minn. — Minnesota farmers intend to plant 7.90 million acres of corn for all purposes in 2024 according to the USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Prospective Plantings report. This is down 700,000 acres from 2023.
Producers intend to plant 7.50 million acres of soybeans in Minnesota this year. This is 150,000 acres higher than 2023.
Spring wheat producers intend to plant 1.60 million acres, up 300,000 acres from last year.
Minnesota farmers intend to plant 180,000 acres of oats for all purposes. This is up 15,000 acres from last year.
Minnesota farmers intend to plant 55,000 acres of barley, down 5,000 acres from last year.
Farmers in Minnesota expect to harvest 1.17 million acres of all dry hay for the 2024 crop year. This is 100,000 acres above last year.
Minnesota farmers intend to plant 440,000 acres of sugarbeets this year, down 2,000 acres from 2023.
Producers in Minnesota intend to plant 37,000 acres of sunflowers in 2024, down 21,500 acres from 2023. Oil sunflower intentions, at 32,000 acres, are 17,000 acres below 2023. Non-oil sunflower planting intentions, at 5,000 acres, are down 4,500 acres from last year.
The Prospective Plantings report provides the first official, survey-based estimates of U.S. farmers’ 2024 planting intentions. NASS’s acreage estimates are based primarily on surveys conducted during the first two weeks of March from a sample of approximately 71,800 farm operators across the United States with more than 2,900 from Minnesota. Actual plantings will depend upon weather, economic conditions and the availability of production inputs at the time producers make their final planting decisions.
United States Prospective Plantings
Corn planted area for all purposes in 2024 is estimated at 90.0 million acres, down 5 percent or 4.61 million acres from last year. Compared with last year, planted acreage is expected to be down or unchanged in 38 of the 48 estimating States.
Soybean planted area for 2024 is estimated at 86.5 million acres, up 3 percent from last year. Compared with last year, planted acreage is up or unchanged in 24 of the 29 estimating States.
All wheat planted area for 2024 is estimated at 47.5 million acres, down 4 percent from 2023 for comparable States. The 2024 winter wheat planted area, at 34.1 million acres, is down 7 percent from last year and down 1 percent from the previous estimate for comparable States. Of this total, about 24.3 million acres are Hard Red Winter, 6.26 million acres are Soft Red Winter, and 3.59 million acres are White Winter. Area expected to be planted to other spring wheat for 2024 is estimated at 11.3 million acres, up 1 percent from 2023. Of this total, about 10.7 million acres are Hard Red Spring wheat. Durum planted area for 2024 is expected to total 2.03 million acres, up 22 percent from the previous year for comparable States.
