MORRISVILLE, N.Y. — Farm and Commercial Scale Composting Workshop on Thursday, February 16, 2023, from 1 to 4 pm at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Madison County Ag Center, 100 Eaton Street, Morrisville, NY.
Between rising fertilizer prices and growing interest in reducing food and farm waste, composting is a hot topic, with lots of potential for farmers and producers! This session covers:
- Technologies and methods for commercial and “farm” scale composting, including the basic biology and chemistry principles behind composting principles.
- Regulatory requirements and operating exemptions, along with some of the Food Safety and Modernization Act (FSMA) implications for those growing and distributing food crops with farm-made compost.
- How composting fits in with the “new” Farm Bill and the “Fertilizer Product Expansion Program.”
- Some of the State and Federal initiatives, USDA and NRCS practices, and other funding mechanisms that might be available for compost production and use.
- Potential business and growth opportunities for targeting food wastes.
