Fall is a great time to plant because we have cooler temperatures, but warm soil, which encourages root growth. Next spring the established roots begin new growth and develop faster than plants planted in spring. Plant roots also have seven to nine months to develop prior to our traditional, hot and humid summers, increasing their rate of survival. The fall also provides increased rainfall and cooler temperatures, which creates the perfect environment to develop. There are also fewer pests and disease problems to be concerned about in the fall. Basically, Happy roots mean happy plants! (The Central Virginia Nursery & Landscape Association. Learn more at http://cceschuyler.org/events
