PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The fishing day might get a little bit longer for Maine lobstermen in the fall.
Legislators are considering a bill to extend the legal hours when lobsters can be harvested in the month of October.
Right now, the laws do not allow lobster fishing from a half hour after sunset until a half hour before sunrise from June 1 to Oct. 31. A bill before a state committee would change it so lobsters could be harvested starting at 5 a.m. in October.
The sun typically rises between 6:30 a.m. and 7:15 a.m. in Maine in October.
The proposal is up for a public hearing before the Legislature’s Marine Resources Committee on Wednesday.
