COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. — Penn State Extension in Montgomery County will offer a hands-on workshop focused on water-bath canning tomatoes. The workshop will be held July 31 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Penn State Extension office, 1015 Bridge Road, Collegeville, PA 19426, in the Maple Room.
Produce and can be preserved using several different methods, this workshop will focus on canning tomatoes and tomato products. If you are new to food preservation, this is a great way to learn safe canning procedures. The workshop will cover:
- Basic equipment and supplies needed for food preservation.
- Which foods are appropriate for water-bath or pressure canning.
- The proper way to raw or cold pack food into canning jars.
- How to use a water-bath canner. The workshop will also offer a review of pressure canning and atmospheric steam canning.
This summer hands-on workshop is a great way to learn the basics of home food preservation. Gardens and farm stands will soon have an abundance of produce. Learn the proper techniques now so you will be ready by harvest time.
The cost of the workshop: The session is $15 per person and includes comprehensive canning information, instructional sessions and a take home canning project. Copies of So Easy to Preserve, The University of Georgia canning guide are available for sale.
Attendees are advised to wear comfortable clothing, close toe shoes and to bring an apron.
