UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State’s Veterinary Extension, in cooperation with the Extension Dairy Team is offering a seminar to help producers understand the crucial factors that can negatively affect the reproductive performance of dairy cows.
“Troubleshooting Reproduction in Dairy Farms” will be held Nov. 9 at the Westmoreland County Extension Office, 214 Donohoe Road, Suite E, Donohoe Center, Greensburg, Pa. Designed for producers, farm managers and other farm personnel, the one-day seminar will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration is free, but appreciated. Walk-ins welcome. Lunch will be provided.
In addition to helping producers understand how the incidence of disease, nutrition and management affect their herd’s reproductive performance, the workshop will show how to integrate best management practices to monitor and control these and other risk factors to optimize reproductive performance.
Combining applied preventive practices to enhance and troubleshoot reproductive performance with the integration of fundamental knowledge regarding cow biology and metabolism will help participants understand the “whys” and “hows” of poor performance to troubleshoot this common — and potentially costly — issue in dairy operations.
Participants will have the opportunity to apply some of the learned techniques to monitor diseases and improve reproduction in hands-on wet lab stations at the end of the program.
Instructors for this workshop will be Dr. Adrian A. Barragan, Extension Veterinarian, and Mauricio Rosales and Andrew Sandeen, Dairy Extension Educators.
