UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penn State Extension Dairy Team will be at Ag Progress Days to interact with producers and offer two special events during the three-day event.
A producer-only tour of the heifer facility at Evergreen Farms at nearby Spruce Creek will be held on Aug. 15, leaving from the Corn Cribs on the APD site at 2 p.m. Participants need to arrive at the Corn Cribs by 1:45 p.m. Plastic boots are required at the facility and will be provided.
Registration is required and space is limited so early registration is suggested by calling the Huntingdon County Extension Office at 814-643-1660.
The heifer barn was constructed in 2015 and features slatted floors and a manure collection system under the barn.
Another highlight for APD attendees is a Dairy Industry Breakfast on Aug. 16 from 6:45 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. which will be held downstairs in the Red Barn. The breakfast is for dairy professionals, agri-business representatives and others working within the dairy industry and is co-hosted by the Extension Dairy Team and the Center for Dairy Excellence.
There is no cost to attend, but registration is required at http://centerfordairyexcellence.org/august-16-dairy-industry-breakfast/.
Featured speaker will be Chuck Nicholson, Penn State Smeal College of Business professor, who will discuss preliminary findings gathered in Phase 1 of the Pennsylvania Dairy Industry Study. Attendees will be encouraged to share their response to the findings that can be used in Phase II of the study designed to provide recommendations for future growth of the Pennsylvania dairy industry.
