Growing Alliums for Storage and Long Term Sales

Join us for an interactive meeting facilitated by Cornell Cooperative Extension Eastern NY Commercial Horticulture specialists:  Amy Ivy, Ethan Grundberg Teresa Rusinek & Crystal Stewart.

Topics will include:  Growing practices that lead to good storage, tips and tricks for harvest, drying and storage, and ample time for audience questions about garlic, leeks, onions, and shallots.

Featuring a grower panel including:  Paul & Sandy Arnold, Jeff Bialis, Jean-Paul Courtens, Brian Denison,  David Stern, and Leon Vehaba

10:00-11:00  Pre-Planting and Planning Field Layout– Field layout, spacing, mulch options, weed mgt, rotations

11:00-11:30   Fertility Management- Timing and rates for best crop growth for long term storage

11:30-12:00  Break

12:00-1:00    Pests, Diseases, Problems- Pest issues and strategies for minimizing their impact

1:00-1:45       Lunch

1:45-2:45       Harvesting, Curing, Postharvest Handling, Storage- Strategies to minimize storage issues and lengthen storage life.

2:45-3:15       Growing Onions Over Winter for Spring Sales- Timing, variety selection, weed mgt tips for success.

3:15-3:30       Wrap up and evaluations
