JOLIET, Ill. — During the last 150 years or so, many prairie landscapes have been converted to residential dwellings where manicured lawns are the norm. Such lawns are expensive to maintain, and lack the appeal of a natural ecosystem. Natural settings can be attractive to both humans and wildlife alike. Prairie patches are low maintenance because they utilize local (native) plants. Best of all, many members of the public are appreciative of natural settings that are more likely less dependent on pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. A wetland could be converted into a prairie habitat. There are numerous benefits of prairie gardens.
How does one:
- select a suitable site
- prepare the selected site
- select plants to grow in prairie garden; seeds or plants
- determine planting dates?
- maintain the site
