NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. — The Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County is hosting a free introductory beekeeping workshop.
“Introduction to Beekeeping” is scheduled to be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Sept. 16 at the EARTH Center, located in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park at 42 Riva Ave. in South Brunswick.
Workshop participants will learn the basics of establishing a hive on their own property, and about the positive impact hobbyist beekeepers have had on the environment’s honeybee population.
“There are many benefits from beekeeping,” said Freeholder Kenneth Armwood, Chair of the Business Development and Education Committee. “In addition to harvesting fresh honey, beekeepers will find that the increased pollination from bees will help improve their gardens.”
“Backyard beekeeping has become vital to the conservation of bees and the protection of their habitat,” said Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios. “I hope this class generates new interest in this practice, and that the bees will continue to keep Middlesex County looking green and beautiful.”
Another topic of discussion will be the best kind of plants to use as pollen sources in your garden. A supply of catalogues will be on hand to show the materials necessary for beekeeping. If weather permits, the lecture will be followed by a brief walk outside.
This is a free workshop, but registration by Sept. 13 is required. To register or for more information, please call 732-398-5262. No “walk-ins” will be permitted.
