Dutchess County 4-H Livestock Sale

All animals in the sale must earn a blue ribbon during their individual shows

PUBLISHED ON September 19, 2017

Each year, the sale has up to 15 hogs, 12 steers, 14 lambs, 8 poultry, 6 goats and 4 rabbits. The champions and reserve champions from each species area sell first during our “sale of champions,” followed by the remaining animals in the sale order. (Photo Credit: Brad Paris)

DUTCHESS CO., N.Y. — On Saturday, August 26th, Cornell Cooperative Extension Dutchess County 4-H youth capped a year of raising award-winning animals with their participation in the annual Dutchess County 4-H Livestock Sale during the Dutchess County Fair in Rhinebeck, NY. A Buyer’s Reception kicked off the event, offering prospective bidders the opportunity to meet the youth, ask them questions, and view the animals. Youth who participate in the sale are 4-H club members who have completed all of the local 4-H program requirements for the year, including a project record portfolio and a public presentation. These youth have raised their animals locally and humanely, and they bring them to the Fair to exhibit and to be judged. All animals in the sale must earn a blue ribbon during their individual shows to be eligible to sell; this guarantees that only the highest quality animals are sold.

Each year, the sale has up to 15 hogs, 12 steers, 14 lambs, 8 poultry, 6 goats and 4 rabbits. The champions and reserve champions from each species area sell first during our “sale of champions,” followed by the remaining animals in the sale order.

A special thank you goes to the 4-H Livestock Committee, which works all year to organize the event, and all of our bidders and buyers!

If you have any questions or would like to receive sale information in the future, please contact: 4-H Educator, Cassie Messina at (845) 677-8223 x108 or cmm473@cornell.edu.
