KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The DiNitto family, owners of DiNitto Farms in Marcy, N.Y., has been named among the 2018 Members of Distinction by Dairy Farmers of America (DFA).
The Members of Distinction program recognizes dairy farmers who excel on their operations, in their communities and in the industry. Honorees inspire others through their actions, leadership and involvement. They represent the best of the dairy industry.
DFA comprises more than 14,500 farmer-owners across the United States. Each year, one notable member farm from each of DFA’s seven regional Areas is selected to receive this honor. DiNitto Farms represents the Cooperative’s Northeast Area.
For three generations, the DiNitto family has worked to steadily grow their operation from 100 to 1,200 cows. The operation’s steady growth is a result of their father’s philosophy, which was passed on to brothers, Joe and Tony, Jr.
“My dad taught me that he believed in farming 110 percent. There was never a doubt whether we should reinvest or buy something new that would help on the farm,” Joe says.
Through the years, the family has proactively taken steps to improve cow comfort and care, including new mattresses in the barns, bigger stalls and ensuring employees are properly trained.
“You get a healthier animal, the more comfortable you make them. In the long run, it pays for itself,” Tony, Jr. says. “It makes you feel good that when they come pick up the milk, you have a quality product.”
The family also has hosted their county’s Farm Fest event for several years and hosts other farm tours during the year to showcase their commitment to quality milk and healthy animals.
The DiNittos hope that by connecting directly with consumers and investing regularly back into the operation, DiNitto Farms will be sustainable for the next generation.
