CORTLAND, N.Y. — Farm Credit East reminds growers to report their 2017 Northeast spring crop acreage by July 17. Farmers need to file their acreage with their crop insurance agent once spring crop planting is complete. The report includes all timely and late planted acreage, prevented planting and uninsurable acreage.
Many Northeast producers have experienced a slow planting season due to the cool and wet conditions. The current situation raises concerns for replanting, possible prevented planting and potential yield losses. If you experience a crop loss it is important to notify your crop insurance agent within 72 hours of discovery. Maintaining detailed records will make for a better claims experience. Claims are typically finalized within 30 days of harvest.
Insurable spring crops include field and vegetable crops such as corn, soybeans, barley, oats, fresh market sweet corn, cabbage, processing beans, processing sweet corn, dry beans, green peas, fresh market beans, tomatoes, tobacco and potatoes. To protect investments in the 2017 crop, spring crop producers signed up for coverage in March.
The crop insurance program has become the backbone of many northeast farms’ risk management plans, providing protection against damage caused by weather, disease, insects or wildlife. Protection is also available if weather prevents the planting of crops or causes the need to replant crops. In addition, some crops can be protected against changing market prices.
