UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penn State Extension Dairy Team is offering a series of interactive workshops to educate farm managers and employees on proper milking techniques and milking practices to produce high quality milk on their farm that will increase productivity and income.
Each workshop will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will be held at the following locations:
- Nov. 3: Clinton County Resource & Education Center, 47 Cooperation Lane, Mill Hall, Pa.
- Nov. 6: East Smithfield United Methodist Church, 312 Church St., East Smithfield, Pa. (Bradford County)
- Nov. 7: Jimmy Stup Farm, 10201 Glade Rd. Walkersville, Md. (Frederick County)

Participants in the hands-on workshop will learn about the importance of early detection of clinical and sub-clinical mastitis, as well as proper treatment protocols. Topics to be covered include cow handling, cleanliness, udder preparation, mastitis detection and handling of infected cows.
Because milking consistency affects a cow’s well-being, mastitis risks and milk output, educators will emphasize using consistent milking practices with attention to cleanliness, udder stimulation and rapid milk flow
The workshops are designed for anyone involved in the dairy industry, including dairy producers, dairy farmers, dairy cow owners, dairy herd managers, dairy farm employees and dairy industry representatives.
Deadlines for the workshops are: Nov. 1 for the Clinton County location; Nov. 2 for Bradford County and Frederick County, Maryland) There is a charge for registration which covers the cost of materials and lunch.
