ITHACA, N.Y. — The Forage Laboratory at Dairy One Cooperative Inc. has been participating in a continuous testing program for corn stalk nitrate. In partnership with Cornell University, the study recently released its results for 2022. The data from this study is an end-of-season evaluation tool for nitrogen management.
“Our work with Cornell on corn stalk nitrate test (CSNT) is a great tool for farmers,” said Kimberly Walker, Director of Analytical Services at Dairy One. “The data helps them make better decisions when it comes to nitrogen needs in their fields.
Since the fall of 2013, Mike Reuter Forage Laboratory Operations Manager, other Forage Laboratory team members, and the Cornell team have been collecting information yearly to work on this study. The study records information such as rainfall, the amount of corn harvested, and the amount of nitrogen available in the soil pre- and post-harvest. The Dairy One Forage Laboratory conducts the CSNT on the submitted corn stalk sample. Currently, the data is only being collected in New York state corn fields. “The work that our Forage Laboratory performs has direct implications for our farm customers, and we are committed to supporting these studies that help determine the environmental factors and farm practices that farmers can use to make decisions that will drive increased yields,” said Walker.
The mission of Dairy One is to create and deliver data and information which will be used to make profit-enhancing decisions for members of the agricultural community.
