JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County’s Agriculture program is pleased to announce the upcoming educational programs for local dairy farm owners, their family members and farm employees, as well as agribusiness representatives working in the dairy industry.
A “Calf Barn Tour and Discussion” focusing on dairy calf management and health will be held on Friday, November 30, 2018, from 10:30 am to 2:00 pm in Clymer, NY. The program will begin at Cabhi Farm LLC calf barn on Brownell Road in Clymer and will continue with complimentary lunch at the Dutch Village Restaurant in Clymer. All individuals who manage calves and heifers on farms are encouraged to attend.
The guest speaker will be Dr. Belinda Thompson, Assistant Clinical Professor at the Cornell Veterinary Medicine – Animal Heath Diagnostic Center. Dr. Thompson’s presentation will include: What is Salmonella Dublin & Why it is so devastating to dairy, veal & beef operations; What is the risk to people; How it spreads; and Treatment, prevention & control strategies.
According to Shannon Carpenter, DVM, NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets, Division of Animal Industry, WNY Field Veterinarian: “I would strongly encourage everyone involved with dairy farms to attend this meeting. Salmonella Dublin has been confirmed in Western NY. This disease is devastating to infected cattle operations. Join us to learn how to prevent it from entering your herd and how to recognize it early.”
Another program for individuals interested in the dairy industry will be the “Driving Dairy Discussions” workshop, presented by Amy Leslie with the American Dairy Association – Northeast.
This program will help participants learn how to lead informative and positive conversations about tough issues facing our dairy industry. This will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at the Frank Bratt Ag Center, 3542 Turner Road, Jamestown, NY from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm, with complimentary light breakfast and lunch included.
