UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Dairy nutritionists, feed industry professionals and others interested in dairy cow nutrition can get the latest information and recommendations by attending the Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences’ 2023 Dairy Cattle Nutrition Workshop, Nov. 8-9 at the Hershey Lodge in Hershey.
Organizers noted that the workshop will take an applied approach to its theme of maximizing transition cow success and enhancing dairy farm profitability. The event will feature a trade show with more than 30 industry exhibitors, a main session with presentations by academic leaders in applied dairy cattle nutrition, and breakout sessions with over two dozen speakers from Penn State, several other universities and industry.
Sessions will cover topics such as the effects of smoke on dairy cattle productivity, pest management, transition cow health, forage quality, fiber digestion, labor management and diversifying the dairy operation with broiler contracts.
A preconference Nov. 8, sponsored by Diamond V, will provide applied, cutting-edge information surrounding the interaction of genetics and the cow’s diet to improve cow health, productivity and well-being. Presenters from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Iowa State University will cover calf immunity, digital dermatitis and transition cow nutrition, followed by an applied dairy cattle nutrition panel discussion.
The main workshop on the morning of Nov. 9 will provide applied information about transition cow success. This session will feature speakers from the University of Guelph, Purdue University and the University of Illinois, who will offer presentations on feeding partial mixed rations in automated milk systems, muscle mobilization in the transition period and mycotoxin management in the cow’s diet.
A post-conference symposium sponsored by Phibro the afternoon of Nov. 9 — featuring speakers from the universities of Illinois and Florida — will cover transition cow diets in the pre-fresh period and vitamin D nutrition for transition cow success.
Early-bird conference registration is $175 until Oct. 1. The registration fee includes the preconference, main session, breakout sessions, post-conference symposium and lunch. More information about the program, speakers and registration can be found at https://agsci.psu.edu/dairy-
