WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — The Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers (CSIF) is hosting a “Calving Under Roof Open House” at the Laura and Aaron Cunningham farm on June 23 near Nora Springs to provide livestock farmers an opportunity to tour an existing calving barn and see first-hand how farm families are making the transition to raising cows and calves under roof.
“We’ve definitely seen an increased interest from farmers in placing cows under roof,” said Brian Waddingham, executive director of CSIF. “This option allows the farmer easy access to monitor the animals and also protects them from inclement weather. The weather has certainly presented some challenges the last several years as has finding available pasture ground to rent. Many cattle farmers are now taking another look at calving under roof to see if this option makes sense for their farm.”
The open house will highlight how modern livestock buildings enhance animal care and safeguard the environment. For example, the Cunningham’s open house will feature a new 100 head deep-bedded calving barn featuring a 48’ x 50’ covered manure bay with 6’ side walls to store manure until it’s ready to be applied to their crop ground.
Experts from CSIF will also be available to provide insight into interpreting rules and regulations impacting livestock farms, enhancing relationships with neighbors and choosing good locations for new barns and feedlots. CSIF assistance is available to farm families at no charge. There will also be an opportunity to interact with industry partners about the products and services they have available to assist cattle farmers.
