SUTHERLAND, Iowa — Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach will host three free crop scouting basics workshops at the ISU Northwest Iowa Research Farm on June 7, 21 and July 19.
Crop Scouting Basics is a three-session workshop series designed to provide opportunities to learn more about crop development and potential problems. Each session will have a different focus.
Session 1
The first session will be held Thursday, June 7, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., and will focus on the growth stages and development of corn and soybeans.
Session 2
The second session on Thursday, June 21, also from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., will look at pollination and weed management.
Session 3
The third and final session will enable attendees to evaluate corn rootworm injury, while the group also discusses other emerging insect and disease issues. This session will be held from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 19.
The workshops will be taught by Joel DeJong, field agronomist with ISU Extension and Outreach.
“In addition to what is planned for each session, we will also plan time to discuss timely topics and concerns in crop production,” DeJong said. “This series is designed to be hands-on and conducted in the field to see real time conditions. We strongly encourage discussion and questions from participants.”
Attendance at all sessions is encouraged, but not mandatory. There is no fee to attend, but individuals are asked to RSVP ahead of time by calling or texting DeJong at 712-540-1085 or emailing jldejong@iastate.edu. Participants are asked to eat supper prior to arriving at the workshop.
The ISU Northwest Iowa Research Farm is located at 6320 500th Street, Sutherland.
