LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kentucky experienced well below normal temperatures and below normal precipitation over the past week. Precipitation for the week totaled 0.24 inches, 0.65 inches below normal. Temperatures averaged 35 degrees for the week, 13 degrees below normal. Topsoil moisture was rated 2 percent very short, 14 percent short, 73 percent adequate and 11 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 5 percent very short, 19 percent short, 69 percent adequate, and 7 percent surplus. Days suitable for fieldwork averaged 4.3 out of a possible seven.
Primary activities this week included harvesting corn and soybeans, stripping tobacco, and planting wheat. A brief period of snow early in the week temporarily slowed harvest. Pastures are gradually improving from much needed rain, but extreme hay shortages are still on the horizon.
