LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky experienced below normal temperatures and above normal rainfall over the past week. Precipitation for the week totaled 1.07 inches, 0.10 inches above normal. Temperatures averaged 72 degrees for the week, 4 degrees below normal. Topsoil moisture was rated 1 percent very short, 20 percent short, 70 percent adequate and 9 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture was rated 1 percent very short, 19 percent short, 72 percent adequate, and 8 percent surplus. Days suitable for fieldwork averaged 6.0 out of a possible seven.
Primary activities this week included cutting hay, topping tobacco, and spraying tobacco and corn fields.
Limited rainfall has impacted pastures and crops, most notably in central portions of the state. Farmers have noted good yields in the second cutting of hay, with reports of better weed control. Hay and roughage supplies were reported as 9 percent very short, 26 percent short, 61 percent adequate, and 4 percent surplus.
