WASHINGTON — The United States Cattlemen’s Association (USCA) would like to extend their thanks and appreciation to every producer, consumer, and organization who raised their voice in support of Petition 18-01 submitted to the USDA’s Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) earlier this year. The comment period closed on Thursday, May 17th.
USCA President Kenny Graner issued the following statement:
“USCA is confident that USDA FSIS will consider the petition and all comments seriously and thoroughly examine the position that alternative proteins such as soy or vegetable-based, synthetic, and cultured cells should be prevented from using misleading terms such as “meat” or “beef” on their product labels. Participating in this public process is just the first step to ensuring truthful labeling on U.S. beef products. USCA looks forward to continuing our dialogue with both the Administration and Congress as we work toward a solution.
“We invite you to continue to make your voice heard on pivotal issues like this at the USCA Fly-In on June 14th and 15th. We encourage all of our members to take this opportunity to advocate for policies that strengthen the U.S. cattle producer’s bottom line, including country-of-origin labeling, flexibility in the restrictive Hours of Service rules for livestock haulers, programs in the 2018 Farm Bill, and more.”
