LOUISVILLE, Ky. — On November 7th-10th the New York State Dairy Bowl team travelled to Louisville, Kentucky to compete in the National Dairy Bowl Competition. Dairy Bowl is a program designed to encourage youth in 4-H to develop their knowledge of dairy cattle and the dairy industry through preparation for an elimination style quiz competition. Individuals compete in teams of four and study and prepare with coaches. Teams compete on the regional, state, and national levels. Columbia & Greene counties’ Vidar Pirrone was a member of the four person team selected to represent New York State at the National Dairy Bowl Competition. Members of the national team represent different counties within the state and are chosen after being amongst the top scoring individuals at the regional and state level competitions.
To prepare for the National Competition team members practiced at Cornell University with coaches Debbie Grusenmeyer and Matt Young and studied materials on their own. National Competition consists of two phases, a written exam, and then an elimination style quiz bowl. New York State came in second place, falling to Wisconsin in a double elimination. We are very proud of all the hard work the National Team put in!
Dairy Bowl teams compete on the regional level in three different age and experience categories—beginner, junior, and senior from ages 8-18.
