ONLINE — Methane is the second largest contributor to global climate change. While climate change mitigation efforts often focus on carbon dioxide, methane accounts for 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and is both more potent and shorter-lived than carbon dioxide. Near-term efforts to reduce methane emissions could slow the increase in global temperatures over the next few decades.
A National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine webinar will explore anthropogenic sources of methane, the role of methane in climate change, and potential actions to reduce methane emissions in the U.S. by the private sector, public sector, and individuals.
Speakers are:
- Fiji George, senior director for climate and sustainability, Cheniere Energy
- Steven Hamburg, senior vice president and chief scientist, Environmental Defense Fund
- Rebecca Leber (moderator), senior reporter covering climate change, Vox; and board member, Society of Environmental Journalists
