COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. — Penn State Extension is offering classes for anyone who wants to learn more about flowering trees that are good choices for use in local landscapes. Two sessions will be held; one November 6, 2019 for green industry professionals, and a second session on November 8, 2019 for home gardeners.
Each class will be held from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Janssen Center on the Penn State Berks Campus, 2080 Tulpehocken Road, Reading PA 19610.
Join us to improve your ability to identify and use flowering trees that will grow well in Pennsylvania landscapes. Learn key identification characteristics, find out about new and improved cultivars, and discover the pest issues you should know about before choosing some of these trees. No prior study of woody ornamental plants is required.
Penn State horticulture professor Dr. David Sanford will cover about 30 different trees. Emphasis will be on trees that are readily available in the nursery trade. We will begin in the classroom at Janssen Center, but we plan to spend approximately half of the class time outdoors touring the shrub collection on the Penn State Berks Campus, so please dress appropriately for the weather.
The cost to attend either day is $60 which includes morning refreshments, lunch and handouts. The class for green industry professionals has been approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture for two Category 05, 06, 18, 23, and PC pesticide update credits. International Society of Arboriculture arborist credits are also available. The class for home gardeners qualifies for the Penn State Master Gardener Advanced Training series in Plant Identification.
