KINGSTON, N.Y. — Need some help planning your vegetable garden? Join our 3-part, live online workshop on April 12 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.! This event will inspire and educate gardeners of all backgrounds and abilities. This is the second 3-part session of the “Vegetable Gardens for Everyone” series offered by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ulster County’s Master Gardener volunteers.
In the first class, “The Best Vegetables to Grow,” Master Gardener Elisa Amster Ross will share her extensive knowledge and save you years of trial and error. Heirlooms and hybrids – what are they and why choose one over the other? When should you plant what? Should you order seeds (which are the best catalogs?), or buy starter plants? Should you plant the whole seed packet?
“How Big Should Your Garden Be?” In this class, Master Gardener Nordica Holochuck will explore how the size of your garden will impact your choices. Do you want to grow enough for fresh eating? Do you want to preserve some of your bounty? She will also discuss how much to plant per person. And what about a fun theme garden, such as a Salsa, Pizza, or Salad garden?
If growing veggies in containers is more your style, class three, “Container and Patio Gardens,” is for you! Master Gardeners Gary Marder and George Volpe will share their expertise. Learn to select the best seed varieties for pots and about all the types of pots now available — should you invest in self-watering pots? Are grow bags worthwhile? What about recycling containers from other uses? Gary and George will also discuss when and how much to fertilize potted veggies.
Each class is live, and includes time for questions and discussion. There will be 30 minute breaks between classes. To register, go to ulster.cce.cornell.edu/events. The cost for all three classes is $25. Registrations will be accepted until April 11, 2021.
