ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — The Angus Foundation, the not-for-profit arm of the American Angus Association®, has invested in the future of youth, education and research for the Angus breed and beef industry as a whole for more than 35 years.

The Angus Foundation commemorated the many generous donors and accomplishments for 2017 at the annual Supporter Recognition Event, hosted Nov. 3 at the Omni Hotel in Fort Worth, Texas, prior to the start of the 2017 National Angus Convention.

The event honored Angus Foundation supporters who have contributed $250 or more during the past fiscal year (Oct. 1, 2016 – Sept. 30, 2017).

“The future of the Angus breed is certainly bright, thanks to the generosity of the Angus Foundation’s incredible donors,” said Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation president. “For 37 years, the Angus Foundation has been leading the way into the future for Angus youth, education and research efforts.”

More than 375 attendees enjoyed a delicious meal featuring the Certified Angus Beef® (CAB®) brand, and the evening’s festivities were led by world-renowned recording artist, songwriter and television and motion picture personality Red Steagall.

Speakers included National Junior Angus Board (NJAB) Chairman Madison Butler, Vincennes, Indiana; NJAB Foundation Director Corbin Cowles, Rockfield, Kentucky; and Angus Foundation Board Chairman John Grimes, Hillsboro, Ohio.

“I think the Angus Foundation has done a great job of using their assets to benefit multiple aspects of the Angus breed,” Grimes said. “To me, it’s taking care of both the youth and adults—and it’s future driven.”

Celebrating Investing in Angus’ Future

The Angus Foundation auctioned the one-of-a-kind artwork, “The Past Leads Us to Our Future ” by artist Cindy “C.J.” Brown, Lindenwood, Illinois. The final bid of $10,000 went to Brian and Scarlett Bell, Square B Ranch, Warsaw, Missouri. The funds will benefit the Angus Foundation’s education, youth and research initiatives.

The Angus Foundation also was proud to honor lifetime giving supporters for their continued investment in the Angus breed. The individuals and families recognized have, over the lifetime of the Angus Foundation, contributed an accumulative $25,000 or more.

Two Angus breeders reached the level of Angus Builders, who contributed $100,000 or more during the fiscal year: Charles W. Herbster, Herbster Angus Farms, Falls City, Nebraska, and Doug and Sharon Stevenson, Basin Angus Ranch, Joliet, Montana.

Honored as lifetime giving Angus Patrons for donations more than $50,000 were Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation, Wichita, Kansas; Fayez Sarofim, Sarofim Angus Cattle Co., Houston, Texas; Sysco Newport Meat Company, Irvine, California; and the Texas Angus Association.

The lifetime Angus Benefactors, reaching $25,000, were: Ron and Lisa Colburn, Colburn Cattle Company, Visalia, California; Randy and Holly Lathrop, Lathrop Livestock Transportation, Dundee, Illinois; Dan and Patricia Vergith, Lylester Ranch, LLC, Martell, Nebraska; and Babe Goggins, Vermillion Ranch, Billings, Montana.

“We are grateful that each and every one of our donors has chosen to invest in the future of the Angus breed,” Jenkins said. “The Angus Foundation will be able to have a positive impact on the Angus and beef industries thanks to their generous support.”

Highlights from the evening included a special presentation to the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) Steer Carcass Contest winners and recognition of Chairman Grimes and Outside Representative Mark Duffell for their service and leadership on the Angus Foundation board of directors. Talon intern Jessica Janssen, Fowler, Indiana, and Talon internship host, Angus breeders Casey and Gina Maher, Maher Angus Ranch, Morristown, South Dakota, were recognized.

Additionally, a special presentation was made to Richard Wilson for his 48 years of service to the American Angus Association and his service as Angus Foundation Secretary-Treasurer from 1983-2017.
