SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — CCOF-certified organic avocado farmer James (Rick) Greenwood was appointed to the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) at the board’s spring meeting in Tucson, Arizona. NOSB is the federal advisory committee to the National Organic Program and meets twice a year to discuss organic standards. Greenwood will join the board as an environmentalist/resource conversationalist.
Greenwood grows organic avocados in San Diego County and produces a certified organic avocado lip balm. Greenwood has cultivated his extensive public health and environmental protection expertise through advanced degrees and 30 years of serving on various boards and committees. He most recently was elected by California avocado growers to serve on the USDA Hass Avocado Board.
Greenwood is a faculty member at the University of California, Los Angeles’s Department of Epidemiology, Department of Environmental Health Science, and the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability. He previously served as a United States Food & Drug Administration science advisor and as a member of the Cancer Prevention and Control Advisory Board at the University of California, Irvine, the California Department of Health Services Statewide Committee to Eliminate Lead Poisoning in California, and other public health and environmental groups.
CCOF applauds USDA’s appointment of Greenwood to NOSB. Greenwood will bring strong scientific and analytical skills to the board.
