ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County (CCE-Monroe) was announced a grant recipient of A Community Thrives, a grant making and crowd-funding program from the USA TODAY NETWORK and a part of the Gannett Foundation. CCE-Monroe will receive a $2,000 local merit grant to support the Harvesting Health: A Garden & Nutrition Approach to Community Building project.
A Community Thrives supports non-profit organizations with projects focused on community building and has helped to contribute more than $6.5 million since 2017. This year, A Community Thrives engaged participants in 46 states. CCE-Monroe was named one of 5 winners in Rochester, NY.
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County provides research-based information and educational programming to ensure the vitality of agriculture, strengthen families, promote health and well-being, responsibly improve home and community landscapes, and enhance our natural environment. The A Community Thrives grant will support the establishment of aSeed to Supper initiative through the CCE-Monroe Master Gardener volunteer program. Seed to Supper is a beginning vegetable gardening curriculum designed for adults gardening on a budget.

The monies that will be used to establish a Seed to Supper program combined with CCE-Monroe’s 4-H youth outreach and SNAP-Ed nutrition education is the perfect recipe for supporting healthy families in Rochester,” comments Andrea Lista, Executive Director, CCE-Monroe.
