AMES, Iowa — Cattle producers from across Iowa elected, Kent Pruismann to serve as a director of the Executive Committee for Iowa Beef Industry Council (IBIC). Pruismann, a feedlot producer from Rock Valley will join the IBIC to oversee the $1.00-per-head National Beef Checkoff and the $0.50-per-head Iowa State Beef Checkoff Programs. The election was held at the Iowa Cattle Industry Leadership Summit on December 10, at the CPMI Event Center in Ames.
Cattle producers were confirmed to the executive committee positions and the one-year members seated to the board of directors during the January 11, 2018 board meeting in Ames. Steve Rehder, cattle feeder from Hawarden, was re-appointed chairman for the second year of the IBIC Executive Committee during the January 11 board meeting. Executive Committee members confirmed include Janine Moore, What Cheer, vice-chair; Dean Black, Somers, treasurer; Tamara Heim, Logan, secretary; Kent Pruismann, Rock Valley, At-Large Director.
Other members serving include: Bill Northey, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture; Joe Colletti, Interim Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University; Bill Goehring, Keosauqua Livestock Market, representing the Iowa Livestock Market Association; two producers appointed by the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association including Dave Rueber, Luxemburg; and Danny Beckman, Danville.
The IBIC board consists of twenty members from the beef and dairy community to oversee beef checkoff programming and investments. Rehder will continue to lead the group of cattle producers who oversee both National & State Beef Checkoff Programs in Iowa.
“My recent re-appointment as chairman provides the opportunity to continue the great programming we started with the new State Beef Checkoff Program,” states Rehder. “The ability to add additional resources will allow the beef community to invest in programs that benefit the beef industry. One exciting area is production research which is allowable under the Iowa State Beef Checkoff.”
IBIC welcomed new board members Kent Musfeldt, Mike Holden, and Mike Keuning to one-year appointments. Musfeldt is a cow-calf producer and livestock product sales manager from Coon Rapids; Holden is a cow-calf and feedlot producer with a private label meat business from Scranton; Keuning is a cow-calf, feedlot producer, and managing an order buying service from Monroe. Other producers serving one-year terms include: Scott McGregor, Nashua; Scott Niess, Osage; Dresden Petty-Wulf, Hudson; Corinne Rowe, Dallas Center; Dan Hanrahan, Cumming; and Dainna Smith, Decorah.
“A focus this year will be on reaching millennial consumers, health professionals, retailers and chefs sharing the benefits of beef and the cattle industry. These activities help drive demand for beef locally, within the U.S., and in the global market all aimed at helping Iowa farmers remain competitive in the marketplace,” adds Rehder.
The 2017-2018 National Beef Checkoff Program, funded through the $1.00-per-head beef checkoff, will invest approximately $1.7 million in state and national beef promotions, research, consumer information, and industry relations programs. An additional $1.7 million will be forwarded to the Cattlemen’s Beef Board.
The Iowa State Beef Checkoff Program, funded through the $0.50-per-head beef checkoff, will invest $1.2 million in areas of beef promotions, research, consumer information, and industry relations programs. The program has oversight from a 10 member board of directors made of cattle farmers from across the state.
