COLOGNE, Minn. — Management strategies in dairy fertility, cow comfort, building a healthy milk check and characteristics of resilient dairy farms will be addressed by the guest speakers at the 28th Annual Carver County Dairy Expo to be held on Monday, February 17, 2020 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. at Central High School in Norwood Young America. Hosted by the University of Minnesota Extension and the Carver County Dairy Core Team, this event draws over 300 area dairy producers and dairy industry professionals. “Dairy farmers are looking to implement effective strategies that will impact their bottom line”, states Colleen Carlson, U of M Extension Educator in Carver and Scott counties. “Our 2020 speakers will address some of the limiting factors in dairy production and what changes dairy farmers can make to gain an extra edge in tight economic times. One more successful pregnancy equals one more healthy calf and that can be the difference in a profit or loss for the year. Attendees will participate in educational talks and visit with over 50 vendors, coming away with strategies to make positive changes in their dairy operations.”
The 2020 Carver County Dairy Expo keynote will feature a dairy farmer speaker panel. Dairy producers will share cow comfort strategies with three different stall surfaces-solids, mattresses and sand. Panelists will address additional cow comfort factors in those systems including stall design, ventilation, water access, feed distribution and more.
Paul Fricke, Professor of Dairy Science and Extension Specialist in Dairy Cattle Reproduction with the University of Wisconsin-Madison will host a morning breakout session on “Management Strategies in an Era of High Pregnancy Rates” and an afternoon session on “Management Barriers to High Fertility.” Dr. Fricke’s presentations will feature his research work which focuses on understanding the biology underlying the many reproductive problems presented by modern dairy cattle along with practical management strategies and new reproductive technologies.
“Characteristics of Resilient Minnesota Dairy Farms” will take a look at the economic characteristics of resilient dairy farm operations in Minnesota over the decades. Joleen Hadrich, Associate Professor and U of M Extension Economist will take a deep dive into historic farm financial statements to interpret benchmarks that put dairy farmers towards the top in profitability.
Barry Visser, Dairy Specialist with Vita Plus states, “Each dairy farm is unique and must consider management factors, cow comfort and evaluate feed ingredients seasonally to make the most of their milk check. Visser will reveal how these factors and others are a consideration to “Building your Milk Check.”
