AUGUSTA — The Maine Department of Education and the Maine Farm to School Network are seeking an artist, with graphic design skills, to create and design local foods promotional materials to be used in K-12 schools in conjunction with Maine’s new Harvest of the Month Program. The artist/designer will be asked to create 12 original works of art that feature specific Maine-grown crops each month, as well as incorporation of that artwork into a variety of formats, including printed and online materials (such as posters, stickers, handouts – Examples). The winner will receive a $5,000 award, recognition as the creator of the artwork, as well as the priceless satisfaction of knowing they are helping get more local foods to Maine students, thereby supporting healthy farms, healthy children, and healthy communities!
The winner will be selected by members of the Maine Farm to School Network, in conjunction with select K-5th grade students at FoodCorps service sites throughout Maine. The winner will be announced via websites, social media platforms and by direct contact through e-mail account(s), or by phone.

HOW TO ENTER THE CONTEST
The contest begins on October 25, 2018. Submissions will be accepted through 5 pm November 9, 2018. To apply, either scan and email your piece to billiejo.pendleton@maine.edu with “Harvest of the Month” in the subject line, or submit via mail to University of Maine Cooperative Extension, 992 Waterville Rd. Waldo ME 04915, attn: BillieJo Pendleton/Harvest of the Month. If you would like your piece to be returned please provide a self-addressed stamped envelope with your submission. The Maine Department of Education and the Maine Farm to School Network will not be responsible for returning entries without a self addressed envelope. All entries:
- Submitted in their original source file, preferably digitally.
- Submission will be blindly identified and coded to keep identity of submitter from impacting voting. Therefore, the artist’s name should not appear directly on the artwork. Instead, artists/designers should include a cover letter which includes the full name(s) of the person(s) who designed the submission, e-mail address, postal address, and telephone number(s).
- The selected artwork will become the property of the Maine Department of Education and the artist/designer forfeits any financial rights associated with reproductions of the artwork/design. The artist will be identified as the creator once a winner is selected.
- Only one submission per person will be considered.
- There is no fee to enter the contest.
DESIGN REQUIREMENTS and GUIDELINES:
PROFESSIONAL: This artwork and design may be featured on websites, social media platforms, print materials, and other mediums such as stationery, pamphlets, t-shirts, recipe cards, etc.)
THEME: Harvest of the Month
INTEGRITY: Design and artwork cannot contain copyrighted material. All work must have been created and edited by the contestant(s). The submissions may not include images or licensed images that have been previously published and must be easily reproducible and scalable for large and small formatting.
ENTRY GUIDELINES and COMMITMENT: Harvest of the Month is a year round program which seeks to pair farmers and food producers with school food service programs through educational materials that promote a different, predetermined crop each month. The original submission must be based upon APPLES. Artists/designers should keep the following attributes in mind as they will be the main characteristics used to judge submissions and determine the winner. Designs should:
- Be appealing and easily recognizable by children ages 4 through 17,
- Be colorful,
- Be easily replicable in a variety of sizes, formats, and mediums,
- Include identification of the variety of the featured crop,
- Be able to be paired with text involved with different Harvest of the Month materials. See example.
- Not contain or feature photography or 3 dimensional elements
The winner of the contest agrees to work with the Maine Department of Education and the Maine Farm to School Network to submit one work of art and graphic design meeting the above criteria, for each month of the calendar year. Each month will be based on a different type of crop (list of crops will be provided), and artwork/designs must be based on those crops. The first three month’s artwork/designs will be due by March 1, 2019. The remaining 9 pieces will be due by May 1, 2019. Award money will be paid on a predetermined payment schedule based on successful completion of the work.
