ORISKANY, N.Y. — Today shopping for meats at the store can be a stressful task with worries about what is available and how much it will cost at checkout. With the nation facing an inflation rate that is at an eight-year high, who isn’t trying to make their food budget go further?
The idea of purchasing local meats has become more popular due to the shutdowns of meat processing facilities during the pandemic. The shutdowns highlighted how quickly the supply chain could be affected. The shortages have pushed consumers to think ‘closer to home’ when making meat purchases. Purchasing local meats allows consumers to have a sense of control. Knowing where their product comes from and to who their money is going. But the idea of purchasing meat locally can seem unattainable when you only see the chain grocery stores for meat purchasing.
That is why Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oneida County and The New York Beef Council are working to provide educational events designed to help consumers beef up their local protein purchasing power! Sharing the who, what, where, why, and how of local meat purchasing.
The first FREE event, ‘Buying Local Meats in Bulk: Tips to Maximize Your Local Meat Purchasing Power’ will be held Thursday, September 29th at 7:00 pm at the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oneida County Office: 121 Second St, Oriskany NY 13424.
