BROOME CO., N.Y. — Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County is very proud to kick-off our 2023 partnership with Broome County Veterans Services Agency and provide hands-on training and support for veterans in Broome County focused on nutrition and healthy eating, gardening and agricultural topics.
Veterans residing in Broome County are invited to join us at the Broome County Regional Farmers Market from 9am-1pm to receive $15 in coupons and then shop with many of the vendors for all their produce, protein, dairy, or other needs. No purchase required. Please bring proof of veteran status. The veteran is asked to be in attendance. If the veteran also receives food stamps, we invite them to exchange their SNAP benefits for tokens to shop at the market and double their purchasing power through the Fresh2You program as part of New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. Veterans can stop by the market information booth to learn more.
Join our nutrition and gardening educators on Wednesday May 17th at 1pm at the Clear Path for Veterans Southern Tier office (Vestal, NY) as we explore how to eat more greens and grow greens in our home! Eating more greens can help strengthen your immune system, are packed full of vitamins and minerals, and can be a great addition to those looking to eat more seasonally. We’ll learn about the most popular greens to incorporate into our diets, and then create a quick salad to enjoy as a group. Then Cornell Cooperative Extension of Broome County Horticulturalist Linda will discuss how to set up our garden to grow different types of greens, from the best soils to how much sunlight they need! To end the class, we’ll get our hands dirty planting some greens to take home and start in your own garden! This class is open to veterans, military members, and their families. Light refreshments and all materials will be provided.
Join chef Chantay Skrine on Wednesday May 17th at 5:30pm inside the Broome County Regional Farmers Market as we learn how to make garlic and herb focaccia! We’ll learn how to make this savory bread and then take it home to take it. Veterans and their spouse or family member are invited to attend. Spaces are limited.
