FARIBAULT, Minn. — U of M Extension is hosting a local Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) training session. Farmers who attend one of these workshops earn a certification, which is good for three years. A BQA certification is being required by many major industry buyers and processors.
The two to three hour training and certification sessions are free. Only one person from each operation is required to be certified to ensure the entire operation follows the BQA standards. However, everyone who handles and manages fed cattle is encouraged to become BQA certified. In response to the large number of producers still in need of BQA Certification, U of MN Extension is providing a modified online/in-person training. The group will be guided through the online modules, and there will be a quiz at the end of class. Attendees will then receive their certification in the mail.
Those unable to attend an in-person session can also earn certification online at www.BQA.org. Farmers have the option of taking an in-person training which is a modified version of the online course: Faribault: January 3 at 12:30 pm – 3:30 pm, Rice County 4-H Building, Hwy 212 Cologne, MN 55322
Walk-ins are welcome; however, RSVP’s are appreciated. Please contact the Rice County Extension Office at 507-332-6165.
BQA is a nationally coordinated, state implemented program that provides information to beef producers and consumers on how common sense husbandry techniques can be paired with scientific knowledge to raise cattle. Its programs include best management practices around ensuring end-product safety and wholesomeness, protecting herd health and animal well-being, and good recordkeeping.
