KEOTA, Iowa — The premier educational opportunity for cattlewomen in Iowa, Boots in the Barn, will be hosted by Keokuk and Washington County Extension this winter. A four-meeting series covering an array of topics in beef has been set for Thursday evenings in January. This program will be sponsored and held at Libertyville Savings Bank in Keota: 225 E Broadway Street. .The meetings and dinner will begin at 5:30pm, and run roughly 2-3 hours each night.
Boots in the Barn will held on January 9, 16, 23 and 30.
“This series has been overwhelmingly popular across the state, and incredibly fun to teach,” Patrick Wall, ISU Beef Specialist said. “Women will interact, share stories and ask questions they wouldn’t normally ask in a male-dominated environment. We’ve had ‘graduates’ of this program call us after they successfully assisted a cow in labor!”
Ryan Drollette, Farm Management specialists, will begin our program at the first meeting to discuss marketing and financial management, including cash flows, balance sheets, and more. Meeting #2 we will be visiting with Dr. Caitlin Wiley, ISU Veterinarian, who will also be bringing “Caramel the Cow” with her. Caramel will allow the class to learn hands-on calving management, dystocia, and delivery methods. Meeting #3 will be hosted by Patrick Wall, Beef Specialist, to discuss pasture management and nutrition. Patrick Wall will also be hosting our final meeting to discuss Health and Management. We will wrap up the program learning more about genetic selection, interpreting data, genomics, and understanding performance records.
Pre-registration for this series is required because an evening meal will be served at each event. Cost is $25 per person. Please register by December 30th.
