BEDFORD, Pa. — Traditionally each July, the Pennsylvania Beef Council and its Board of Directors takes their summer meeting on the road to explore and further deepen their knowledge of the beef, dairy and veal communities.
This year, the board and staff gathered on July 17 at the Esh Family Farm located in Howard, Pa. For nearly 20 years, this dairy farm has prided themselves in aged to perfection artisan cheeses known by the name Goot Essa, which means “good food.” They manufacture about 100,000 pounds of cheese a year and now ship to high-end restaurants and markets in all 50 states.
The unique cheese business got started out of necessity when the farm owners and their nutritionist looked for ways to maintain the family farm and determined they needed to specialize themselves.
“It’s nice to see that with a little dedication, forward thinking, and innovation, the Esh family was not only able to keep the family farm operational, they also turned it into a business in which the entire family is able to stay on the farm,” said David Kearns, Jr., PBC Vice-Chairman.
The PBC board is comprised of 27 directors representing beef, dairy and veal, as well as industry stakeholders from the livestock marketing, retail and food service sectors. The board also includes ex-officio members from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, the Pennsylvania State University Department of Animal Science, and the Delaware Valley University Department of Animal Science.
