COLUMBIA, Mo. — Leading scientists will share how big data affects the soybean industry April 10 during the fourth annual Missouri Soybean Center Symposium at the University of Missouri’s Bond Life Sciences Center in Columbia.
Shilpa Sood, scientist with the Climate Corp., tells how digital agriculture brings new sustainable solutions to farmers. Sood leads teams that create predictive models for use in agriculture. She previously worked as a scientist at Monsanto.
Bill Wiebold, Missouri Soybean Center director and MU Extension soybean specialist, will introduce the 2019 Missouri Soybean Hall of Fame inductee.
A panel of soybean farmers including Robert Alpers, Kyle Durham and Aaron Porter will discuss challenges of growing soybean in Missouri.
Bob Schnabel, MU associate professor of animal sciences, talks about the use of genomics in cattle breeding programs. He identifies molecular markers for traits that improve growth, meat quality, feed efficiency, fertility and milk production. His work includes the Bovine 50K SNP chip, or “snip chip,” which lets researchers look at 50,000 cattle DNA markers at the same time.
Katy Rainer, associate professor of plant breeding and genetics at Purdue University, presents an update on how data from drones and sensors is used to select soybean varieties.
Scott Sebastian, retired research fellow for DuPont Pioneer, gives the Poehlman Lecture on accelerated yield technology based on more than 30 years of genetic research.
