BHC Livestock Judging Team success

Starts 2022 with two wins in two days in two time zones

The Black Hawk College Livestock Judging Team competed and took first place Jan. 11 at the Cattlemen’s Congress Collegiate Livestock Judging Contest in Oklahoma City. (Courtesy Photo)

GALVA, Ill. — In a span of only two days, the Black Hawk College Livestock Judging Team won two contests in two time zones.

First, the 14 students competed Jan. 11 at the Cattlemen’s Congress Collegiate Livestock Judging Contest in Oklahoma City. The BHC team of Ty Drach of Pontiac, IL; Emma Dunn of Tipton, IN; Dillon Sheiss of Larwill, IN; Kelly Spicer of Woodbine, MD; and Keaton Woods of Tipton, IN, took 1st place in the junior college division.

The quintet also placed:

  • 1st in Cattle Reasons and Swine
  • 2nd in Cattle and Reasons
  • 3rd in Sheep/Goat

Individually, placing in the Top 10 were:

  • Dillon Sheiss – 1st overall, 1st in Cattle, Cattle Reasons, Reasons and Swine, 3rd in Sheep/Goat
  • Ty Drach – 4th overall, 6th in Cattle Reasons, 9th in Cattle, 10th in Reasons and Sheep/Goat
  • Keaton Woods – 8th overall, 3rd in Swine
  • Emma Dunn – 10th in Swine

The students then headed to Denver for the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) Collegiate Livestock Contest and NWSS Carload Contest.

On Jan. 13, the team of Drach, Dunn, Sheiss, Spicer and Woods outscored 23 teams to win the NWSS Collegiate Livestock Contest junior college division. Sheiss came in 1st overall with Drach in 4th, Spicer in 5th and Dunn in 8th of 108 competitors.

On Jan. 14, the team of Robby Burchett of Jonesville, VA; Tyler Gifford of Eagle Point, OR; Jennifer Hoelscher of Eden, NY; Emma Richardson of Capron, IL; and Jordan Stephens of Ewing, KY, took 5th of 25 teams in the NWSS Carload Contest junior college division. Hoelscher came in 9th overall out of 113 competitors.
