BELGRADE, Mo. — A backyard chicken in Belgrade, Mo. was just named Miss Congeniality in the Purina® Miss Flock-Tober® pageant. Local flock raiser Candace Maxwell entered to compete against hundreds of strong hens to earn this honor.
“My daughter, Ryleigh, started raising chickens in February this year,” says Maxwell. “We have 14 hens in our flock and she’s bonded with an ISA Brown hen named Dixie Chick. They are the best of friends. It made Ryleigh’s day, week, month and year when Dixie Chick won Miss Congeniality!”
Miss Flock-Tober®, hosted by Purina Animal Nutrition on the Purina Poultry Facebook page, celebrates strong hens during this annual contest. Maxwell submitted her photo of Ryleigh with Dixie Chick, her favorite hen. As the winner of this round, Dixie Chick is now in the running to win the ultimate title of Miss Flock-Tober® 2019, with the grand prize being a year’s supply of Purina® poultry feed.
“Dixie Chick has always been the sweetest hen of the flock,” says Maxwell’s daughter. “She’s playful, fun, and loves it when I hold or pet her. She loves to free range and when I sit with her. She’s the best chick-friend a girl could have.”
This year’s Miss Flock-Tober® contest is eggs-tra special, as Purina is celebrating 125 years of innovation. The Purina® Flock-Tober® celebration continues through this month.
The next round of Miss Flock-Tober® begins October 14 with the category of Miss Fancy Feathers. The top entry in each round of the Miss Flock-Tober® contest will move on to the finale round, which begins November 4.
