OTTUMWA, Iowa — Iowa State University Extension and Outreach invites area young farmers to a gathering on February 21 at 6:00 p.m. in Ottumwa. The local Start to Farm peer group will meet to discuss ways to diverse income from the farm by growing products like fruits and vegetables.
Joe Hannan, horticulture specialist, will talk about what crops have the propensity to make money and how. Joe will discuss production practices, soil preparation, budgets and identifying market relationships.
Group coordinator, Colin Johnson said the meeting will be an opportunity to view agricultural production in a different way. “Even for those without previous interest in fruits and vegetables, the discussion may open your thoughts to something new and innovative with your farm and current commodities to generate revenue or added value.” The goal is to identify business opportunities that can diversify the income stream for a young farmer.
The Start to Farm peer group is an initiative of Iowa State University Extension and Outreach with support from several Iowa commodity groups. Funding is provided by the USDA Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program.
The meeting will be held at Wapello County Extension and Outreach located at 13011 120th Ave, Ottumwa. A light meal will be provided.
