MADRAS, Ore. — This survey will be used as a screening tool for a project funded by the Oregon Beef Council and proposed by OSU faculty, Juliana Ranches, Ian McGregor, and David Bohnert.
The main goal of this project is to evaluate the mineral status of cow-calf herds across the state through liver biopsy sampling while characterizing the currently used mineral supplementation programs. Approximately 28 ranches or/and 350 cows will be enrolled in this project. There is no cost for producers to participate in this project, however it is important to note that survey completion does not guarantee enrollment in the study – After survey completion, operations will be selected based on several criteria. If an operation is selected they will be contacted in order to schedule the best time for sampling. After sample collection producers will receive a report regarding the mineral status of cows that were sampled and guidelines to implement and/or improve their mineral supplementation program. At the end of the project all data collected will be summarized and will be published at the OSU Extension website to be use as reference guide.
